HERE BE DRAGONS
‘‘Here be dragons’’ is a phrase used by cartographers to denote dangerous or unexplored territories.
The project is an investigation into how perception of safety and danger influences our relationship with city environment and our spatial behavior.
The work is based in the London Borough of Hackney and consists of two parts. First, are a site survey and a collection of maps that express the views and stories of the local residents on where they feel safe and unsafe in the area. The maps were created to visualize the findings but more so to illustrate the ways that one creates and narrates their own personal cityscape.
The second part is a series of guerilla style public interventions that were carried out in order to feed back the opinions of the public. Posters containing quotes from the local residents were put up in locations that they were in reference to.
The follow up part took place in one of the local parks. A map presented the layout of the park reflecting how safe/unsafe people felt there. It was aimed to represent how fear can physically change the environment.

‘‘Here be dragons’’- это фраза, используемая картографами для обозначения опасных или неисследованных территорий. Данный проект – это исследование о том, как восприятие опасности влияет на наше представления о городской среде и воздействует на наше поведение в пространстве. Проект формировался в одном из восточных районов Лондона и состоит из двух частей. Первая – это собрание карт, отражающих объективное состояние территории: уровень освещения, граффити и расположение камер слежения, а также визуализации того, как местные жители ощущают себя в данном пространстве. Вторая составляющая – это публичная кампания, так же состоящая из нескольких компонентов. Постеры, содержащие цитаты из рассказов местных жителей были повещены в местах, о которых шла речь. Далее, карта, идентичная официальной по дизайну, но содержащая реальное использование пространства жителями была расположена в местном парке.
